HME Our Commitment to GES: Making a Difference in the Mountain Tourism Industry

August 17 , 2024 | News

At HME we are committed to excellence in every aspect of our operations. One of the fundamental pillars of our service is the commitment to the Sustainability Management System (GES, by its acronym in Spanish). This approach not only sets us apart in the sector, but also ensures that our clients, staff and the environment receive the respect and care they deserve.

What is GES?

The Sustainability Management System (GES) is a comprehensive framework that ensures that all our activities are carried out in a sustainable and responsible manner. GES covers various aspects, from environmental management and social responsibility to economic transparency and staff well-being.

Our Focus on GES

  1. Environmental Sustainability: We work hard to minimize the environmental impact of our operations. This includes using sustainable practices at our camps, such as proper waste management, using renewable energy, and reducing our carbon footprint. Unlike other companies that use gasoline generators, which emit noise and bad smells that disturb the peace and local fauna, we use solar panels to supply the necessary energy in our camps. This choice not only protects the natural environment, but also improves our clients’ experience by maintaining the peace of the place.

In addition, at HME we are committed to recycling: we separate waste and deposit it at established recycling collection points, ensuring that our waste is managed responsibly and does not affect the environment. On our expeditions, we educate participants about the importance of conserving the natural environment and following environmental regulations.

One of our pride is the implementation of toilets in the camps. These toilets are designed to reduce environmental impact, ensuring that all solid waste is managed safely and responsibly. We use sustainable techniques and methods to minimize any negative effects on the environment. This practice not only keeps our campsites clean and safe, but also preserves the natural beauty of the places we visit.

  1. Social Responsibility: We believe in actively supporting local communities. We employ local guides, cooks and support staff, ensuring our operations directly benefit local economies. Additionally, we participate in community projects and volunteer programs, such as our work with the Andean Relief Corps and the Integrated Mountain Tourism Program (PTI, by its acronym in Spanish), which contribute to the development and well-being of the areas in which we operate.
  2. Staff Wellbeing: The well-being of our team is a priority. At HME we offer competitive remuneration, in line with the market, and we ensure fair and safe working conditions. Our staff receive ongoing training and have access to professional development programs, allowing them to grow and prosper within the industry.
  3. Economic Transparency: We operate with solid ethics and financial transparency. We comply with all tax laws and maintain clear and accessible financial records. Annually, we assign 1% of our profits to social and/or environmental programs, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and support for significant causes. This not only strengthens trust with our partners and clients, but also ensures that our operations are sustainable in the long term.

How Are We Differentiated?

The commitment to GES significantly differentiates us from other mountain tourism agencies. While many companies focus solely on offering competitive prices, we go further by integrating principles of sustainability and responsibility into every aspect of our operations. This allows us to offer a richer and more meaningful experience to our clients, who are not only seeking adventure, but also positively contributing to the world around them.

We invite our clients to join our commitment to sustainability. By choosing HME, you are not only opting for a high-quality experience on America’s most challenging summits, you are also supporting a company that values and protects the natural environment, local communities, and the well-being of everyone involved.

Thank you for trusting us and for being part of a new way of exploring the world, with responsibility and respect.
