The end of Cajón del Maipo Valley
The San José Volcano climbing with 5856masl, is right at the end of Cajon del Maipo together with its neighbour Marmolejo, with 6100masl. Together, they create a natural frontier between Chile and Argentina. Both of these giants are considered classics in Chilean mountaineering. One of them holding a massive glacier, and the other hiding a colossal crater. In this expedition we will have a day to reach an old abandoned refuge which we will use as base camp. All the way to this point, we’ll be able to use mules to carry our equipment. In order to reach the high altitude camps (C1 and C2), we’ll have to carry our own food and equipment by ourselves in our backpacks (25 – 28 kilograms, approx.) Each one of us will be responsible of some equipment, like tents, kitchenware, food, fuel, etc.
